Pexco Improves Safety on the 6th most Dangerous Road in the World

Tacoma, WA (October, 2011) – Traffic safety is a serious concern on the Dalton Highway, a 414-mile road in Alaska, one of the most remote, and the 6th most dangerous highway in the world. In order to improve the safety of this vital roadway, Pexco partnered with the Alaska DOT to develop a new design of delineator post that would improve visibility for DOT workers and “ice road” truck drivers plus reduce maintenance for the agency.

Testimonials: Snow Poles

Evaluations methods and procedures used:
We have used the 10' orange polyolefin type "O" snow poles in deep snow areas for many years. Initially 200 were bought and used at Jackson, Pinedale, and Afton. This very limited quantity was used with good results and an additional 800 were ordered for Pinedale. Our procedure has been to wire the snow pole to delineator posts in the fall and to remove them in the spring and store them in the yard until fall again. A longer pole of 16' has been discussed with the company and some are presently being tried at Crater Lake, Oregon. We have only used 10' poles. The orange color has held enough to see when plowing and rotarying. There tends to be some permanent bending due to wind or snow load but this has not been a problem as the deflection above our delineators isn't over a foot or so. There has been minimal loss due to theft-apparently the public can't think of a use for the poles. There has been no breakage in the two years of use and they should last several years. They are cost effective, easier to handle and will last longer. The poles are easier to see at night but they do lose color in sunlight and should be stored in shade during summer.

Reason for acceptance:
Cost effective where required in deep snow areas for winter operations.
