Small Concept Grocery Store Goes Big with Aisle Markers

Download full report

Challenge:
A leading small box discount retailer wants to launch a new grocery store concept and seek a proven retail plastics manufacturer to design and deliver larger custom aisle marker signage to fit within approved design specifications.

Solution:
Leverage 45 years of extensive experience designing and producing retail point-of-purchase merchandising solutions to custom create the larger, high- impact aisle marker to guide customers.

The two-piece aisle marker is larger, easy to install using universal ceiling hardware and exceeds exacting weight and design specifications.

Innovative Thinking:
One-stop shopping is the new must-have for retailers competing for the almighty dollar. Faced with more competition and consumer interest in a “get in and get out” shopping experience, many are adding grocery items and selling against price and convenience.

These changes in shopping habits and demands were a top priority when a small box discount retailer set out to launch a new grocery concept in locations throughout the U.S. Every aspect of the new space including signage was considered and expertly designed. A key priority was making sure aisle markers would encourage customers to easily transition from established convenience aisles to new grocery departments.

The retailer specified double-sided aisle markers to display colorful graphics and aisle categories and meet weight and design specifications. Knowing that the pieces would be installed and maintained by store management and used in locations with different ceiling heights, the finished piece had to go beyond a standard solution.

The retailer briefly considered a hand fabricated application and realized it would not yield a consistent, high-quality result, especially when considering the quantity of markers and quick turnaround.

Because of an existing relationship, the retailer approached Pexco. The assignment: custom design and extrude a larger aisle marker.

Pexco gathered its Chicago Center of Excellence engineers. First up, extruding the wider board from industry-standard High Impact Polystyrene (HIPS) without any cupping or bowing.   Next up was addressing the limitations of producing boards up to 22-inches. The solution included devising a fail-safe way to interlock two pieces that would stay perfectly flat and support on-site retail assembly.

The team also found a way to address weight and size issues and provided a design that was 20 percent lighter than specified and could be cut back by six inches to accommodate stores with lower ceiling heights. An added benefit to the custom solution was the team’s ability to enhance the design for a longer shelf life since the bottom half of the extrusion can be disconnected and new pieces can lock in place to display new colors or graphics.

Sales contact Dan Bardgett managed the relationship and worked with the client to provide prototypes and receive approval at critical stages during the compressed delivery time frame.

Today, the new aisle markers are in place and the new concept is being implemented and rolled out in almost a dozen stores with a goal of more than 75 per year in the near future. The signage has exceeded expectations and earned high marks for better informing, educating and organizing the new retail shopping experience. Pexco is able to quickly extrude and deliver new custom aisle markers as stores are brought on line.
