Durable Channelizer Posts Guide Traffic Through Bridge Rehab

A "hometown" project for a nationwide leader in traffic control products

Tacoma, Wash. (December 10, 2009) – Durable, flexible channelizing posts from Pexco, a leading plastics extruder, are helping to keep traffic moving smoothly during a major bridge repair project in Tacoma, Wash. Although Pexco supplies traffic control products for roads and bridges across the country, the posts were manufactured just minutes away at Pexco's Tacoma facility.

The bridge rehabilitation project stems from December 2002, when rail cars caught fire under the Puyallup River Bridge on State Route 509. The intense heat damaged bridge columns and girders. Although temporary repairs allowed the bridge to reopen, more permanent repairs are now underway.

In November, construction crews began removing and replacing damaged 140-foot-long girders and pouring a new concrete bridge deck. Because the road is an economic lifeline in Pierce County with over 30,000 vehicles using the route each day, keeping traffic moving during construction was critical.

Crews are repairing one half of the damaged span at a time, reducing traffic to one lane in each direction. As a result, engineers needed a durable, reliable system to mark the temporary lanes in the work zone. They chose Davidson® DP 200 3-inch urethane channelizer posts from Pexco.

The DP 200 Series post is made of polyurethane, the toughest flexible plastic available. It remains flexible even at extreme temperatures and returns to an upright position after impact. The DP 200 Series meets MUTCD requirements for channelizing devices, and the requirements of NCHRP 350.
