What Are High-Performance Polymers and When Are They Useful?

Today’s marketplace calls for companies to be innovative and flexible. Custom plastic extrusion can support innovation and is a large part of what we do at Pexco.

Discover the Exceptional Qualities of High-Performance Polymers

When multiple factors come in to play, it is important to choose a resource that has the capabilities and expertise your project needs.

Now, we would like to give you a little more detail on some resins with outstanding properties you might not be aware of. Located at the top of the pyramid below, these polymers are known for being more difficult to produce and can be higher cost. However, the tradeoff is a better-quality polymer that showcases a range of value-added characteristics. Made of Polyetheretherketone (PEEK), high-performance polymers deliver exceptional chemical and temperature resistance, making them ideal for demanding applications.

When compared to common resins, high-performance fluoropolymers and fluoroplastic extrusions are set apart by their extreme tolerances and mechanical properties. These lightweight polymers require little maintenance, which aids in extending project life and in delivering greater efficiency.

Common Applications Include:

  • Food & Beverage
  • Chemical Processing
  • Air & Ground Water Monitoring
  • Semiconductors
  • Automotive
  • Laboratory
  • Medical
  • Pharmaceutical
  • Electrical
  • And More…

These PEEK polymers can help ensure a smooth operation due to long-lasting durability. Choosing the right extrusion material for your project is critical—so make sure the one you pick matches your project requirements.

At Pexco, we have three facilities that produce stock and custom tubing with these high-performance traits. These acquisitions have helped expand Pexco’s reach into the high-performance polymer market. Our Exlon facility, located in Asheboro, NC, specializes in custom and proprietary lines of nylon, polyurethane, polypropylene and polyethylene pneumatic tubing and recoil hose products, all in a variety of colors and sizes. Our Altaflo plant, located in Sparta NJ, is defined by uncompromising quality (100% virgin-grade) fluoropolymers (PTFE, FEP, PFA, PVDF, and more) that can handle the broadest range of temperatures from cryogenic to 550 F◦ and are primarily used for fluid handling. Finally, we have our Scandia facility, operating since 1971 and located in Scandia, NH, specializing in rigid tubing.

Should your project call for high-temperature resistance, aversion to destructive chemicals, or strength against extreme pressure, then a high-performance polymer from Pexco might just be the perfect fit.
