Improving Safety On The Sixth Most Dangerous Road in the World
Challenge
Alaska’s remote Dalton Highway, one of the most dangerous roads in the world, presented extreme safety challenges due to harsh weather, poor visibility, and frequent impacts that damaged traditional roadside markers. The Alaska Department of Transportation needed a durable and low-maintenance solution to improve visibility and protect motorists in these severe conditions.
Solution
Pexco custom-engineered the “Dalton Delineator”, leveraging its plastic extrusion expertise to create a flexible, impact-resistant post that withstands subzero temperatures, high winds, and repeated vehicle strikes. The design features UV-stable materials, a resilient coupler system, and high-reflectivity surfaces to enhance visibility even in whiteout conditions.
Outcome
The Dalton Delineator has significantly improved road visibility and driver safety along the Dalton Highway. Its durable, low-maintenance design has reduced replacement costs and downtime, helping Alaska DOT maintain safer travel on one of the world’s most demanding routes.
